HORNER BOWS OUT AT LORD'S WITH PRIDE HELD HIGH 1st July 2008

The first visit to Lord’s for Leeds Bradford UCCE ended in defeat to Loughborough by 66 runs in a pulsating MCC Universities Challenge Final which swung one way, then the other, during the course of the day.

The match was also the last one in charge for Head Coach, Richard Horner, who retires at the end of the season, but both Horner and his team could leave the home of cricket with their heads held high.

On a brilliantly sunny day Rob Sutton won the toss for Leeds Bradford and asked Loughborough to bat, and after six overs it looked as though this was an inspired decision with Richard Browning having dismissed both Loughborough openers, Paul Borrington and Johan Malcom-Hansen, with only 15 on the board. Tom Flowers and Arun Harinath then steadied things for with a partnership of 62, before leg spinner Tom Pringle began to weave his magic.

In a superb spell bowling from the Nursery End, Pringle took 5 for 26 from his 10 overs, reducing Loughborough to 120 for 7. At this point LB were very much in the driving seat, but an 8th wicket partnership of 69 between all-rounder Jonny Hughes and wicket keeper Dan Pratt wrestled the initiative back in Graham Dilley’s boys favour. Harry Gurney returned to the attack to dismiss both these players but a niggling last wicket-stand between Tom Parsons and Mike Baer saw Loughborough close their innings on 217 for 9 from their 50 overs.

Horner’s team were confident at the break, but right-arm swing bowler Gavin Baker soon eroded that following a devastating opening spell. He removed Chris Dougherty with the third ball of the innings and followed that up by dismissing Mark Robertshaw, Duncan Snell, Rob Sutton and James Hawley in quick succession, to reduce the Yorkshire boys to 27 for 5.

James Moorhouse and Chris Prowting then dug in, adding 70 for the 6th wicket before Moorhouse was bowled for a well-constructed 56. Prowting fell soon after for 33 to leave Leeds Bradford with a mountain to climb on 130 for 8 and, despite some spirited resistance from Tom Pringle (16), Richard Browning (11) and Dan Woods (8), Baker’s opening spell had rendered it ‘mission impossible’.

Despite defeat, the whole trip was a truly memorable one of the Leeds Bradford squad. Most cricketers dream of playing at Lord’s without ever getting the chance, but all the team did the centre proud and certainly made the most of the experience.

A reception followed in the Long Room after the game where Gavin Baker narrowly pipped Tom Pringle to the man-of-the-match award, and the squad made a private presentation to Richard Horner in their dressing room at the end of the game to mark his last game in charge.

The full scorecard for the game can be seen in our Fixtures & Results section.

TWENTY20 RUNNERS-UP 25th June 2008

The inaugural Univerities Twenty20 competition, held at Durham over 23rd & 24th June, saw Leeds Bradford claim the runners-up spot after losing to Loughborough in a closely faught final.

The six UCCEs, plus Exeter and Bristol/UWE, took part over the two days wearing coloured clothing and using the new experimental pink ball. LB comfortably won their first game against Bristol/UWE and then tied their second game against Exeter, both teams finishing up ob 137 for 9. However, LB were deemed the winners having registered the better scoring rate over the first 6 overs.

In the final they met Loughborough - who, of course, they will be locking horns with at Lord's next Monday. After at one point being 117 for 4 with 7 overs left, LB faded and managed only 140 for 9 from their 20 overs. In reply Loughborough managed to win for the loss of only two wickets - but with only two balls to spare!
